[android] MMS on Nexus One

0

I was having serious trouble getting MMS to work on my Nexus One, but I think I've finally figured it out.

My provider is BASE and I'm suspecting they have a filesize limit on the messages while the standard Android messaging client on the Nexus One doesn't resize images enough. At least that's my conclusion after last night's experience.

Yesterday evening, after wiping out all my APN's, re-entering them and switching off the phone I sent out three more MMS to no avail, even though the waiting signal did disappear for the first time. However, this morning turned out that they got delivered after all somewhere during the night. Don't see any reason for the delay though, but I was glad I've got them delivered.

Then I did a little test: I 'shared' one image through messaging with a filesize of 84kb and another with a size of about 500kb. This time the small one got delivered at once, while the bigger just got stuck in my inbox with the waiting signal.

The standard messaging client doesn't seem to have a maximum MMS filesize setting somewhere, so I've switched to Handcent SMS, a free and enhanced alternative which much more settings, one of which is called 'Maximum MMS Size'. This lets you choose between 200k, 300k, 500k or 1mb per MMS. I've set mine to 300k which should do.

Another thing: you might need to enter/wipe your APN's a few times and do a hard reset. I've found that my mobile internet connection works quite instantly but MMS is a bit flaky. The first time I tried I always got the message: "Unable to send message, will try later when the service becomes available".

Here are the settings for BASE (Belgium) on which I got it working:

Internet:

  • Name: BASE INTERNET
  • APN: gprs.base.be
  • Username: base
  • Password: base
  • MCC: 206
  • MNC: 20
  • APN type: default

Leave all the other fields blank.

MMS:

  • Name: BASE MMS
  • APN: mms.base.be
  • Username: base
  • Password: base
  • MMSC: http://mmsc.base.be
  • MMS Proxy: 217.72.235.1
  • MMS Port: 8080
  • MCC: 206
  • MNC: 20
  • APN type: mms

Again, leave the other fields blank.

Good luck.

Update: a few days later I got in another MMS-message from BASE, telling me I had to watch the MMS online. However once there, the only thing I could see was a broken thing of 32kb. I really wonder if they are going to bill me for broken messages that never went anywhere.
